Ask Missy Boo About Antique
Furniture RefinishingAntique Furniture Refinishing goes way
back in the family. Missy Boo comes from a large family of antique
dealers specializing in antique furniture refinishing. They are
well known in the area for their work. Aunt Jeanette works full time
at refinishing antique furniture and keeps very busy. We asked Aunt
Jeanette to write down for us how to refinish an antique piece and here is
what she has to say. You can see some of
her work and some of the pieces she has for sale at her
website. Antique Furniture Refinishing - How To -
Items you will
need:
a piece of furniture to work on paint remover #3 steel
wool rubber gloves 2 brushes putty
knife sandpaper rags
container such as an empty milk carton to put your used material in
Start by
protecting your work area with newspaper. Place your
piece of furniture on the newspaper and wearing rubber gloves
start applying the paint remover with a brush. Continue applying
the paint remover until the paint or finish stops soaking up the remover
and remains wet appearing. Let it soak for about 20 to 30 minutes
making sure it stays looking wet. Use your putty knife to remove whatever
paint or finish is loose. Recoat the piece with paint remover until all of
the paint has been removed and scrub with steel
wool.
Sanding your
piece Unless your piece of furniture is extremely
rough, you should be able to start with #80 sandpaper then move to
#120 grit to finish. Always sand in the direction of the grain. The piece
should be very smooth when finished and without any sandpaper scratches.
Staining Choose the color that you
want for your wood and apply the stain with a brush and wipe off with a
rag.
Finishing I recommend 3 to 4
coats of good varnish to seal the wood properly. After each coat
of varnish you will sand the wood down with #220 sandpaper and wipe off
the dust with a damp (not wet) towel.
