Bird House
Whether you purchase a birdhouse or build one, you can't help but enjoy the birds that
come to visit. With a very simple one you can show a child how
a bird family lives. And with a more ornate one, you can dress up
your yard.
Many gardeners erect houses for the birds
to encourage them to live nearby and eat the bugs and worms that plague
their gardens and flowers. When the bird's young are in the nest and need
to be fed the bugs from the garden are a nearby feast.
Some people get so into building unusual bird houses
out of unusual materials that
they use them for indoor decoration instead of a home for the birds.
You can erect a house for a cardinal, robin, finch, blue bird,
purple martin and more.
Birds
will take residence in a rustic bark house,
a gourd, or a castle. If you want to attract birds that will
use your house to live in, look into what type of bird you want to attract
and what the requirements are for that particular species.
To attract a certain species of birds, you need to
take into consideration the dimensions of the house, the dimensions of the
entrance hole, how high above the ground the house is placed, location of
the placement, and the style of the house. For more information on
how to choose the right house, go to our sister site, Feeders and
Houses.
Some birds prefer the location of their house to be near
woods, water, with a perch, or possibly away from humans. You'll
also need to protect the birds you attract from predators such as cats and
dogs.
Kits or plans are available to build your own or you can
nail a few old boards together. There are some beautiful bird houses
available online. When you purchase one, check out the
quality of the piece. You'll want it to last for years. Warning
- Bird houses can become addictive. You can have such a
great time with your first one that you keep adding them to your
yard.
