Building Pondless Waterfall Update-December 12, 2006
We've got some ideas we want to try next spring, but we've gotten snow on the ground so we'll get our ideas together over the winter. We still want to paint the concrete wall behind the falls possibly with a scene. I want to add some more soil and raise the flower bed a little higher for a more natural look. We'll be back in the spring with more photos.

Building Pondless Waterfall - Day 1 June 30, 2006

We had an old concrete stairway in our back yard that became obsolete.  I love making things out of nothing.  The stairway would be a big problem to get rid of so we're converting it into a pondless waterfall.  Here's what it looks like now. Let's start digging.

We're building this waterfall without a kit.  We had many of the materials in our basement.  We started with a 5' X 10' piece of pond liner, a small pond tub, and a water pump.  The rocks have been hand picked from a river bed but we're going to have to go back and get a lot more.

Here's the tub we're going to use to hold the water. The hole needs to be a little larger than the tub. Once we got the tub set in below the bottom step and filled in around it, we cut a 5' X 10' piece of old carpet foam and laid it out on the steps.  The pond liner went over it. We placed some patio bricks on the edges of the steps under the liner to make a path for the waterfall and tucked it all into place.

July 6, 2006 - Building Pondless Waterfall
The northeast has had a lot of rain and many areas are flooded.  As a result we haven't been able to work on our waterfall. It's finally nice enough to get back to the project. We decided to bring in some dirt along beside the stairs on one side and planted a few plants. Before planting we enriched the poor soil with peat moss and humus.

The next thing we need is more stones.  The good news is that the river was at flood level so it churned up lots of new rocks for us to pick from.  The bad news is we've had to wait for the water to receed.  We're headed up to the river tomorrow to check it out.   Meanwhile we decided to dig out a couple inches of dirt in front of the tub and place stone in that area.

We placed a layer of chrushed stones from the driveway around the tub where we dug some dirt out.  Flat rocks will be placed over these later on.
