Ask Missy Boo About Concrete Maintenance and Preserving Concrete Lawn OrnamentsHere in the Northeast we need to do a little concrete maintenance to keep our concrete in good condition. We get so much rain and snow that the concrete is often getting wet.We like to use a good concrete sealer to keep the water out. Preparation is important. Make sure your piece is clean and dry. If it has been outdoors make sure it hasn't rained on the piece in several days. Concrete sealer can be applied with either a brush or spray. It is important to cover the piece thoroughly leaving the piece wet looking. The sealer will soak into the concrete. Make sure you seal the bottom of the piece as this is the part that sits in water when it rains or snows. When you display your lawn ornament outside, place it where it won't sit on dirt or mulch. Sit it on concrete, wood, a stepping stone, deck block, something that will keep it from sitting in water. In the winter we bring most of our concrete inside. We have snow from November through April and the statues survive much better inside. If it is not possible to bring them inside, make sure they are not sitting on dirt, mulch, or any surface where the piece will be sitting in water. Birdbaths and fountains cannot be left with water sitting in them when it is freezing. The frost causes expansion of the water and will eventually break up the concrete. Repairs can also be made to concrete lawn ornaments. For info on repairing concrete, click here. A little prevention goes a long way with concrete maintenance. We've seen concrete lawn ornaments that are 50 years old and still look great because they have been well cared for. To return to concrete lawn ornaments from concrete maintenance, click here. |
