Ask Missy Boo About Jockey Lawn Ornaments

Jockey lawn ornaments are one of the most popular of concrete lawn ornaments.  We've seen two sizes available the smaller jockey boy and the larger cavalier.  They are usually painted in bright colors and there is much controversy about them.

Jockey boys are now found painted both as black boys and as white boys but were originally painted as blacks.  The legend is that George Washington refused to let a young black boy fight in the battle at Trenton N J due to his youth.  George Washington asked the boy to watch the horses while they crossed the Delaware River and hold a light so they could see him when they returned.

When the troops returned, the boy was frozen to death holding the lantern.  As a tribute to him, George Washington had a statue made to honor the boy.

The statues were also used by slaves as part of the underground railroad to let the escaping slaves know whether it was safe or not.  Ribbons were tied to the ornaments with green signaling that it was safe and red indicating danger.

Jockey ornaments are widely available.
