Ask Missy Boo About Painting Concrete Lawn OrnamentsPainting concrete lawn ornaments can be great fun and very rewarding. We've heard many people say "Oh, I couldn't paint them." but the truth is it doesn't take talent, it just takes a little bit of knowledge. Painting concrete isn't like painting a painting. The photo on the right is Missy Boo's cousin Travis who painted the Loch Ness Monster he is riding. Travis painted lots of pieces for us that summer and did excellent work. We liked a natural look with subtle colors to most of our concrete. To get that look, we cleaned the piece thoroughly. This can be accomplished in many ways. Power washing, jet spray from a garden hose, brushing loose dust off with a stiff brush are a few of the ways to prepare your piece. Check your piece over to see if there are any needed repairs or rough seams that could be smoothed down. Once the concrete is clean and dry, we paint the piece with a base coat of black or white acrylic paint - usually black. When the black is dry, we dry brush the piece with the colors we've chosen. Two colors are applied over the base coat. Start with the darker one. Concrete sealer can be used to help protect the paint when you are satisfied with your piece.
