Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder

A squirrel proof bird feeder can be a necessity when you have a problem with squirrels eating all your bird food and chasing the birds away.  There are several ways you can keep the pests away.

Squirrel proof bird feeders are available in stores and online or you can build your own. The ones I've seen range in price from $50 to $100.

Many companies design and patent elaborate feeders to keep the squirrels away.  We've seen one where the squirrels must step into rollers that roll him off so he can't get near the food.  You can also use some very simple tricks.

My sister simply greased the pole the feeders were hung on so the squirrels couldn't climb the greasy pole.  This was fine until I leaned against the pole to pick something up and got a handful of grease.  I guess it would work fine in an area where you wouldn't be getting into the grease.

You can nail pieces of aluminum flashing to a wooden pole to keep them from climbing up the pole.  Place one nail in the center at the top of each piece and bend the aluminum away at the bottom so the squirrel can't get past.  Squirrels can be extremely imaginative when it comes to getting bird seed from a feeder.
